Kristin Hissong is a founding member of Aware! and an intelligent and persuasive advocate for peace. Her academic work has focused on, among other things, the complex issues of ethnic identity within the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. We like her. We figured you’d like her too, so we asked her to tell us a bit about herself:

Are You Aware?

How much do you know about the Israel-Palestine conflict?

In order to start our new discussion off on the right foot, we’ve put together a brief historical primer of the conflict.

Why we need a “New Discussion”

Aware! is motivated by a new narrative, a new discussion of this pervasive and persistent conflict.

We’re convinced that this conflict won’t be solved by politicians, internationals, or military leaders. We know it’s going to take a joint movement of Israeli and Palestinian moderates at the grassroots level who will stand up and be counted for peace. But for that to happen, the narrative has to change. It can no longer be us vs. them anymore, especially in the peace camp, both here and abroad. Those who truly are working for peace need to live it, drop the barriers and find some common ground. We must begin to staff our organizations with locals from both sides of this conflict and shift our focus from politics to people. Finally, we must find the narrative that will include the mainstream, not sideline them.
